Description

This issue of what punk is has been disputed between fans and academics alike for decades, it is difficult to define authenticity within the punk genre as there is no context with which we can put punk into to give it a formal meaning, or in this case a concise view on authenticity.

The rational for this type of research becomes apparent throughout the text, when realizing how many different views there are on the same subject, the three fold core texts (Ideologies - O’Hara, 1999, Authenticity - Moore, 2002, Musically - Fabbri, 1981) used as the base framework we can then reinforce and contradict theories to be able to assess views on authenticity.

The research conducted applies a theoretical and contextual framework through archive research, codification and other qualitative approaches to explore the parameters of what contributes to authenticity within punk, in implementing archive research it has been possible to analyze different generations viewpoints on the subject in question, cross-referencing these to a theoretical and conceptual framework it has been possible to mark down similarities with in the text to better determine social views on authenticity within the punk genre, exploring views on authenticity, ideologies and musicality as the fundamental aspects of a genre, we can then cross reference these, linking aspects of each to each other to find patterns we can follow to help determine what makes ‘Punk’, punk. The main findings of the text were that punk is a concept open to interpretation, and that punk is wide spread in terms of authenticity, ideologies and musicality, the broadness of subject matter leads the way for further research which contributes to the discourse and rationality of the work.
